About This Database

This database was conceived of and is maintained by Dr. Joel Harrison, a scholar of religion with an interest in the intersection of religion and culture. Joel’s book-in-progress, Palms of Victory, Crowns of Glory: Punk, Politics, and the Aesthetics of Authenticity in Evangelical Christianity, explores the ways that “Christian punk,” broadly speaking, impacted the religious and political formation of younger Gen-X and older Millennial evangelicals in the first 10-15 years of Tooth & Nail Records’ existence. As part of that project, Joel started compiling lyrics from Tooth & Nail releases to generate data regarding their content and found that access to many T&N releases is somewhat limited. Joel launched the creation of the database at the end of 2024 and continues to build and optimize it both for posterity as well as for use by scholars of religious music, evangelical culture, punk and religion, etc.

The database would not be possible without the very generous work of Cameron George, who compiled the initial comprehensive catalogue list long before this project was underway.
